Lumo mineral pigments, Nikawa (hide glue), Japanese paper (Gasen-shi), drafting film, paper 40 x 30 cm 2018 - 2020

In this work a very thin sheet of Japanese paper is dotted with fine-grained mineral pigments; the sheet is cut and two to three layers are juxtaposed. Thus, a series of dots is applied to a single long sheet of the Gasen-shi calligraphy paper in an intentional contextual pattern. The series of dots is then disrupted through random cuts; by superimposing these layers, the dot patterns are brought into a new context to form a complex higher order pattern. This method was inspired by John Cage and it also resembles a device used in musical composition, such as fugues by JS Bach. The patterns of scattered dots and the impressions of depth are further enhanced by the encasing translucent drafting film.
